| As the director of the Ford Galaxie Club of America, I am asked on occasion by different companies to review their products. Recently though a program instituted by My Shine Box, Cooper Tire Company sent out a complete set of Cooper Radial Tires for me to evaluate. Since the Firestone radials that were on our 1972 Ranch Wagon were reaching the end of their life, and since the Keystone Klassics that have been on the car for almost 8 years were starting to look rather used, we decided to obtain some American Racing aluminum 200S series wheels in 17" x 7" with 3 3/4" backspace. The stock wheels have a 3 1/2" backspace so we figured that this would be the way to go. After recieve the 4 Cooper CS4 Touring radials one afternoon and the wheels about two weeks later we decided now was the time for the change. AND WHAT A CHANGE! The 225/65R 17 shorter sidewall flexes less than the 15" tires did and the car handles better than it had from before. This size was figured within 1%+- to be the closest size to the 15" that were on it and we wanted the odometer and speedometer to be accurate enough so we didn't get pulled over by the police. The tires are very confortable to drive on and look very nice also. Cooper has a great looking sidewall design that stands out and the tread pattern is an All Season Radial design. You can reach Cooper Tire's home page from this link or by clicking on the picture below. In my opinion, the wheels really set off the car and the 17" size just look so much better than the stock 15" size. Handling is greatly improved with the shorter side wall and the Cooper Radials seem to hold the road very well. I know this isn't a performance car, but it is a cruiser and gets LOTS of great compliments whenever I take it out. Since we live in a part of the country that has lots of hills and curves, I guess in time I will be able to see how well the tires hold up under use. The are rated for 60,000 miles. Not including shipping, mounting and balancing, the tires are available on line and elsewhere in this size for about $110.00 each. In the meantime...WHY NOT TRY A SET OF COOPERS next time around? |
